Miss Nine Interview by AscenDance Radio

Dayanna: We’re here at the Mixology 10 Year Anniversary Closing Party with Miss Nine. So, to start things off I read you were a model before becoming a DJ, those seem like two different worlds. How did you get into DJ’ing?

Miss Nine: Well, my boyfriend he was a DJ at the time I met him. He came up with the idea, why don’t you? So we tried playing the records and you know, you never know what comes out. So one day I took a record of his and started playing by my own. I started buying my own records and had a little collection. He had a few contacts already and he arranged me a gig in Amsterdam and from that point on I continued everything and more and more gigs came. In the end of 2005, Deep Dish, The American DJ Duo, saw me and asked me to join their agency and asked me to tour with them for one year around the world. They introduced me to different countries. After that year I did everything on my own until today.

Dayanna: What was your reaction when you found out Deep Dish was interested in your talents?

Miss Nine: I was like, whoa. How is this possible? I was really surprised and honored to be on the road with them and I learned a lot from them, skills and everything.

Dayanna: So you learned a lot from them?

Miss Nine: Yes, we’re still good friends. We hang out, we have dinner together.

Dayanna: Sweet. Even though you became a DJ you still do modeling. Sometimes when you’re on the runway do you ever get the urge to run over to the DJ booth and show them how it’s done? Or are you not that type of model?

Miss Nine: (laughs) No, you know, these are two different jobs. When I do one I prefer to do one at a time, not both. I mean, I’ve done both things, play records and wear the clothes and then went on the runaway, walk back and forward, and went back tot he both. But I prefer to do one thing at a time because you have to focus on one if you want to do it good.

Dayanna: How do you find the time to balance those two things?

Miss Nine: I have two managements working for me. A lead management for modeling and Around Nine in Amsterdam for the rest of Europe and Bullet Bookings for the US, South America and Asia. They keep contact every week and if an option comes in they put it in an online calendar and talk to each other and whatever confirms first is it.

Dayanna: Wow, how exciting.

Miss Nine: Yes

Dayanna: Now, how did you come up with the name Miss Nine?

Miss Nine: I get this question a lot. Nina is my nickname and my family called me from when I was little Nina and I was born March 9th and it’s been a lucky number of mine.

Dayanna: I don’t mean to get personal, are you in a relationship right now?

Miss Nine: Yes, I’m still with the guy I was with when I first started.

Dayanna: So if you two were to get married does he become Mr. Nine.

Miss Nine: (laughs) No, no I have something with the number nine but no, no, he’s just my friend and if we get married he’ll be the husband but not Mr. Nine.

Dayanna: So this past Friday at the Ultra 12 you didn’t just have one performance, you had two on the same night. One on the Mainstage and one at the Heineken Dome which we were lucky enough to catch that, you were amazing, how did it feel to have two different performances on two different stages only hours apart.

Miss Nine: Well, it was my first Ultra Music Festival at all and I have to say I loved it. When I started to play on the Mainstage the field was crowded in like two minutes and the people were really into the music with hands up the whole time. After that at night I played the Heineken Dome. It was nice too, it was smaller but it was different and vibe was still there.

Dayanna: Well your performances are really high energy. You’re often jumping around and really getting into the music. What’s it like being up there in front of thousands of people. Do you change your set as the crowd reacts to it? How do you feel it out?

Miss Nine: The set will never be the same. Of course you have two records fit perfectly together. I’m traveling around the world and in each country and in each city it’s different. Building the set up, pleasing the people and giving them what they ask also doing my thing in between. Feeding them a little bit of my new music, my new productions as well.

Dayanna: Do you feel it’s harder to make it in the DJ industry being a female and if so do you have any advice for any aspiring female DJ’s who want to follow in your success?

Miss Nine: I have to say in the beginning it was hard for me to take off. But in time I think proved my skills that I can be one with the guys. From that when point Deep Dish saw me and asked me to be part of it, touring around the world, I totally forgot all about it. You know you have forums on the internet, I stopped reading them and just went my way and went on and on until here. For the girls starting now I would say keep on practicing and be you, be normal and do your thing. Go for it 100%.

Dayanna: That’s great. What can your fans look forward to seeing from you in the future?

Miss Nine: In the future I’m dealing with a few projects. I’m mixing a 2nd Yoshi Toshi compilation. I’m also busy with an artist album. I started a label last year to release some of my own productions and some other new talents who wouldn’t get the chance to sign tracks with other labels. My radio show Nine Sessions is broadcast over 30 stations.

Dayanna: Oh wow.

Miss Nine: Traveling around the world, enjoying the life.

Dayanna: What a life.

Dayanna & Miss Nine: (laughs)

Dayanna: Alright well thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us and we look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Miss Nine: Thank you.

Dayanna: Thanks again.
